Auteuil, Paris
Friday 27 May - Monday 30 May
“ Noel will be joining us for a unique dinner on the evening of Saturday 28th May and then travelling with us on sunday 29th May to spend the day at the Auteuil racetrack where we will be watching the days racing...”
The Gras Savoye Grand Steeple Chase de Paris
For the National Hunt followers, what could be better than spending a weekend in Paris in the spring time to watch this Classic meeting at Auteuil racecourse on Sunday 29th May. Enjoy the delights of this magical city, the numerous monuments and museums along with the never ending list of restaurants and bistros which cannot fail to enchant you.
The construction of Auteuil racecourse was instigated in 1873, after the riot of the communes in 1871 damaged the Vincennes track. The town of Paris gave permission for a new jump track to be built in the Bois de Boulogne, next to Longchamp racecourse. There are only two jump tracks in Paris, one at Auteuil & the other at Enghein. The first Grand Steeple Chase de Paris was run here in 1874 and is the most important race run at this track today. Few British horses have been able to succeed at this course as the fences are completely different. The most famous and most feared is the rail-ditch and fence, 4.10 metres long and 1.60 metres high, not forgetting the La Rivière and the Bull Finch to name a few and all of which have to be negotiated three times! Only a true champion can win this race with the most audacious jockey in the saddle.
The Gras Savoye Grand Steeple Chase, sponsored by the equestrian insurance company for the past ten years, is a group 1 race run over 5,800 metres with 23 jumps for 5 year olds plus, offering a prize money of 820.00.00 euros. The 2010 edition saw the surprise win of the Norman horse Polar Rochlais, ridden by Jérôme Zuliani and trained by Mr P. Quinton. The track has the most magnificent grandstand offering all the amenities for you to enjoy an exciting days racing. Places can be reserved in the panoramic restaurant overlooking the winning post should you wish to dine and watch the racing at the same time.
