The perfect get away for horse enthusiasts
Since the nineteenth century Deauville is regarded as the "Queen of the Norman beaches"with its sumptuous hotels, casino and trendy bars. It is a very special destination made fashionable by the Parisians and beloved by the French and British racegoers alike.
During the month of August there are four group meetings collectively known as the "Prix de Deauville" which culminates on August 25 with the Group II race Le Grand Prix de Deauville, a flat race for thoroughbreds of three years and above, run over 2,500 metres.
Many famous jockeys have competed in this race, Lester Piggott, Willie Carson, Frankie Dettori and John Reid to name a few. The race was won last year by Cirrus des Aigles, ridden by Franck Blondel, who also won the Grand Prix de Vichy in July. There is also racing on Saturday at Clairefontaine and for those who wish to do a four night stay from Thursday there is also a meeting at the Deauville la Touques track on Friday.
The French holiday season is almost over at this time of year and the yearling sales have finished which means that Deauville is far more relaxed and calm but by no means is the season over, you can still enjoy the market, fine dining and the racing in comfort.
